Journal Entry for Piggy

Today was the scariest day of my life. I was reading a book on my plane ride when the pilot came on the speaker and said that we are going down. He said that we got hit and that we are now headed straight into the ocean. We were crashing. When we fell down, an airbag hit me and I survived. I had a bruise on my left thigh but otherwise I was all right. When I came out of the plane, I ran away as fast as I could and as far as I could. When I reached a forest I fell down. I was so scared and tired. For a second it was all quite. I thought I heard a boy talking to himself. Then the buzzing sound started again. I got up and followed the direction of the voice that I heard. I eventually saw a boy walking through the forest. I took my glasses off and wiped them. I put them back on and the boy was still there. I yelled for him and he turned around. He saw me and we were both happy that we found one more survivor.

Today we found out that we weren't the only survivors. In the morning we introduced ourselves. His name was Ralph. He didn't ask me for my name, but instead he called me by the nickname that all the bullies at school used to call me, Piggy. The nickname was probably because I am a little overweight. We walked around and then we found a little pond. We put our feet in it and it was warm. We decided to take a quick bath in it because we were both very dirty. While we were bathing I noticed a conch in the water. I told Ralph to carefully pick it up because it is very fragile. Ralph blew the conch and all the boys who had survived the crash came to us. We all started asking for people's names. While we were doing that, on the far shore we could see a group of boys coming. When they came they told us that the leader was Jack and that the rest of the boys were a choir. Ralph wanted to be leader of the group but so did Jack. We voted and Ralph had won.  Ralph said that we should make a fire to make smoke that will signal a passing ship. He then made a few simple rules:
  1. When the conch is blown it signals a meeting that everyone has to attend unless stated otherwise.
  2. Only the person with the conch can speak and cannot be interrupted by anyone except for Ralph.
  3. The fire is the most important thing.
Ralph then called a meeting. The meeting was about what the boys would do next. Jack was still mad because Ralph had won the "election". Jack said that he was going to make his choir into the hunters and they would be in charge of getting the food. Ralph said that he wanted Simon, one of the boys, to help him make the shelters. Everything was going great.
___________________________________________________________________

I chose this characters because he was one of the main characters. He was important. He could always use logic to solve a problem and he was never a trouble maker. He would always listen and follow orders. Although he wasn't much of a physical helper, he was a mental one. At the meetings he always had good points. He was the one who came up with the idea to use a fire to signal a ship, and he was also the one who said that it would be a good place for the fire to be on top of the mountain. I chose this time of his life because this is the time he was the most helpful. While Ralph, Jack and Simon were off to explore the island, Piggy was the one who took care of the little boys. Piggy was of most help at this time.

I think that Piggy is vital to the novel because he is very helpful.  He was an essential part of the survival of  the boys on the island. He would always solve problems using logic and he would motivate everyone. Piggy also would always look on the bright side of things. He was always full of great ideas and everyone would agree to them. Without him the boys would have a hard time living on the island.
Even though Piggy is a main character, the "spotlight" wasn't on him that much. At the begging I had difficulty predicting what Piggy was doing when he wasn't mentioned, but then when I uncovered more facts about him, it was easier. I used the facts that I uncovered to write this journal entry.
