Journal Entry for Ralph

Note: This font might be different from the font on my other blog posts because I was writing this post in a Microsoft Word document.

Today I won an election. When we landed on this island I met Piggy. He was another boy that survived. When we were bathing in the pond, he saw a conch. I blew the conch and it echoed throughout the island. All the boys who survived heard it and came to us. We all learned each other’s names. Then on the shore in the distance we saw a group of boys coming. It was Jack and his choir. They were all very tired and dirty. I assumed I was going to be the leader because I brought us all together, but Jack was against that. He wanted to be chief too. We had an election and I won. After that we made a few simple rules. The conch was a sacred item because it was the item that brought us together. I also said that when I blow the conch, it signalizes a meeting that everyone must attend. I also said that only the person with the conch could speak at these meetings. We also needed to make a fire to signal a passing ship using smoke. I then decided to see if this land that we are is an actual island. I chose Jack and Simon to come with me. We walked along the shore. When we reached the mountain we climbed it. The color of the mountain was unusually red. When we got to the top we looked around. This would be a great place for a fire. It turns out this is an island.

Today we worked hard. We all climbed the mountain and we started making the fire. There was lots of work to be done around the fire. We had a group bring wood while another group was bringing leaves. When we got hungry we found some fruit and we had “lunch”. After lunch we went back to work. When the firewood was placed in the right spots, we needed a fire. We had trouble coming up with a way to make a fire. Jack then came up with a brilliant idea. He said that we could use Piggy’s glasses to make the fire. His specs were very thick so the sun made a heat ray and we successfully lit the fire. The fire produced only a little bit of smoke.

Today is the day that we made the shelters and killed out first pig. Jack and his choir, who were now his hunters, went hunting while me and Simon stayed to work on the shelters. Everyone else went to swim in the ocean. When Jack came back he had a dead pig in his hands. Finally we get to eat something that wasn’t fruit. Two shelters were done and the third one was almost done. It was hard to make the shelters because they kept on falling down. Today was a tiring day.

I chose Ralph because he is the main character. The story is based around him. He was the one who would go around and make sure that everything was going well. He would go through lots of trouble just to ensure that the boys would survive and eventually get rescued one day. Ralph also managed to convince everyone that everything will be great and that there is nothing to worry about. I chose this part of his life because this is the time when he was most brave and when he had the most energy. He was a great leader too and he proved that he could take care of all the older and younger boys.

I think that Ralph is vital to the novel because he was the one who brought the boys together. If that didn’t happen, the boys would have never found each other and some might have died of starvation or the cold weather during the night. He was also a great leader and he could control all of the boys. He also took care of the little boys and helped them survive this terrifying experience. He was also brave and full of energy when it came to something serious.
I came up with the predictions for this journal entry by using facts about Ralph. At the beginning the author tells you al lot about Ralph. Throughout the book the story was based around him. Almost always did I know where he was and what he was doing. For some of the “scenes” I didn’t know so I used the other scenes to understand his life patterns. I used those facts and predictions to write this journal entry.
